U10’s – Training Resource

These are just some of the drills we will be using at training sessions over the next few weeks.

Contact: with the top of the shoulder – Not the upper chest as this takes away the dangers of injury and allows the defender to drive in the tackle.

The head is close to hips but on same side of the tackle. Do not get head across front of target. Practice both sides left and right shoulder tackles

  • Eyes on the target
  • Contact with the top of the shoulder
  • Head to the side
  • Eyes looking forward,not down at the grass
  • Eyes forward!

Arms wrap- Once the shoulder has made contact and the head is in the right spot nice and tight, eyes looking forward

Key points:
  • Eyes on the target
  • Contact with the top of the shoulder
  • Head to the side
  • Eyes looking forward, not down at the grass.
  • Rapping arms around the thighs of target
  • Contact with shoulder not chest!

[toggle title=”Full Tackle from Knees”]

Once shoulder has made contact and head is in right position,eyes looking forward and arms are wrapped around the thighs the defender now drives and roll from the knees.

Focus must be made to stay tight to the player all the way to the ground.

This will assist in the complete tackle and start the process of winning the ground work.

Key points:
  • Defender on his knees
  • Eyes on the target
  • Contact with the top of the shoulder
  • Head to the side
  • Eyes looking forward,not down at the grass Rapping arms around the thighs of target Drive from  the knees
  • Roll and use your momentum to drive
  • Stay tight and gripped to thighs all the way to ground
  • Use the attackers momentum to help

Comes off the line hands up gets his feet close to target,shoulder to the  target,head in tight in the correct position.

Arms wrap around the thighs and drives with the legs all the way to the ground. Defender must stay tight all the way.

NO SPACE after contact,assisting in the tackle and start the process of winning the wrestle on the ground.

  • Defender on his feet
  • Eyes on the target
  • Get off the line forward
  • Hands up In boxers position
  • Contact with the top of the shoulder
  • Head to the side
  • Eyes looking forward,not down at the grass
  • Rapping ai’TTL’!i around the thighs of target
  • Drive with legs to the side
  • Roll and use your momentum to drive
  • Stay tight and gripped to thighs allthe way to ground
  • Drive don’t dive

[toggle title=”Diamond Tackle Drill”]

Players on opposing comers of a diamond shape. On the go they go round the markers on the coaches call and one player makes the tackle one player runs the football.

Important for the defender to come off the line straight and square and keep eyes on the target and hit with the shoulder.

The attacking player goes wider left and right simulating side on tackles on both sides of the body.

Key points:
  • Both player around the cones
  • Defender off the line stralght and square
  • Tackle right shoulder / right foot forward
  • Eyes on the target
  • Off straight then change direction to make side on tackle
  • Hit and stick
  • Rapping arms around the thighs of target
  • Drive with legs to the side
  • Roll and use your momentum to drive
  • Stay tight and gripped to thighs all the way to ground
  • Get around the cones with fast feet

Player must come forward first and after the pole get out and make the side on tackle; we do this to simulate the player coming off the line straight and square.

Feet must stay short and fast and get close to the target. Eyes must be focused on the target,about the hips or upper thighs. Get your head in behind and drive don’t dive – Once on the ground if the tackle is successful you can drive with toes in turf!

Key points:
  • Defender gets forward square then around pole
  • Tracks to ball carriers Inside shoulder
  • Keep eyes on target
  • Target Is between hlp and thighs
  • Feet must get dose the target
  • Good contact Is essential
  • Following good contact lock up legs
  • Head must be behind target and lock locked in
  • Drive don’t Dive
  • Finish on top and on toes
  • Do not swing on ball carrier

Feet must stay short and fast and get then dose to the target. Eyes must be focused on the target,about the hips or upper thighs.

Get your head in behind and DRIVE DON’T DIVE

Once on the ground if the tackle is successful you can drive with toes in turf! Tempo is a skill that is required to allow you to get close to the target.

Key points:
  • Keep eyes on target
  • Target Is between hlp and thighs
  • Tempo Is needed on approach
  • Feet must get dose the target
  • Good contact Is essential
  • Drive don’t dive unless attacker Is getting away
  • Following good contact lock up legs
  • Head must be behind target and lock locked in
  • Do not swing on ball runner
  • Drive don’t Dive

Defenders need to be aware of where they are and where their mates are in the defensive line. Good communications is imperative;call and respond to calls.

The same space must be kept between each other;this will neither invite nor put off the attacking players. It will keep it under control.

Once the football passes you in defensive line you must follow the football so that when or if it is passed back inside you will be there to shut it down.Shut the gate.

Be a defensive UNIT!

Key points:
  • Outside foot up
  • Hands up
  • Head up looking forward
  • Off the line square
  • Quick ftrst four steps
  • Slide to the football once it is past you
  • Maintain same distance between defenders
  • On your toes /short fast feet dose to line 1Paddle
  • Keep shoulders square to defensive line
  • Shut the gate once the football is past you.

[toggle title=”Defensive Tracking Drill”]
Defender gets off the line fast,reaction to the decision to go after the pass.Paddles at the paint of change of direction and stays balanced. Gets his hands up and is balanced on his feet.

Keep the attacker on the outside and do not get beaten on his inside,by staying lateral and not too side  on. Go, make the tackle after the PASS! before the pass and you are likely to be beaten by the decoy.

Key points:
  • Get off the line square
  • Long strides early
  • Slow to paddle at ball player
  • Watch the baII player for pass
  • Once football Is passed track out same direction as pass
  • Track to Inside shoulder of ball runner
  • DO NOT GO BEFORE THE BALL IS PASSED
  • DO NOT GET BEATEN ON THE INSIDE

[toggle title=”Defensive Technique – Hit Shield”]

Defender has mobile feet from the start, paddling on the line, hands are up for the target, eyes are on the target.

Shoulders not chest make contact. After contact be sure that the legs drive and get the head tight. Hit and stick by using the hands and arms for grip. We use the shield to give the player confidence in the contact.

Key points:
  • Fast feet
  • Off the line straight and square
  • Get feet to target
  • Head up/eyes on target not grass
  • Stay tall and dip late
  • Hit with top of shoulder /not upper chest
  • Drive with legs
  • Hit and stick
  • Head in
  • Be confident in the tackle
