Sunday 2nd October 2016 was another great day for Halton Farnworth Hornets as we had two age groups representing us in the 2016 Lancashire Cup Finals at the Select Security Stadium.
Under 12’s Lancashire Cup Final 2016
The under 12’s competed in their second final of the year against a big physical Rylands side. As one would expect in any final, it was a closely-fought match with both sides giving their all in a quest for silverware.
It was a nervy start for both sides, but Halton settled quickest into the game and marched Rylands downfield to enable Lewis Hughes to deliver a very good cross-field kick that George Delaney gathered to step past the defence to score out wide.
On the back of a good break from Nathan Bannerman the ball moved quickly to the right, to Sam Haynes who attacked the ball at pace and powered through three defenders to score a very good try.
On the last play of the half Rylands kept the ball alive to score in the corner to make it 8-4 at the interval.
Rylands had their tails up and started the second half well as one of their big props threw a good dummy and powered over from close range. With the successful conversion Rylands now led 10-8.
As the Hornets have shown time and time again, they stayed calm and kept themselves well in the game, hitting straight back with some big defence led by man-of-the-match Adam Jack, Adam Holroyd, Nathan Bannerman and Dylan Simm.
On the back of the strong defence, Ben Lane terrorised Rylands with his speed and footwork and was well supported by Joe Riley who looked dangerous with ball in hand.
Hornets went close a few times and finally got their reward from another pin point kick from Lewis that George took it on the full and weaved past a couple of defenders to score his second try. Lewis converted to make it 14-10.
Both sides pushed for another score but defences were back on top and the game finished with Halton winners.
Congratulations to our under 12 Lancashire Cup Winners who now go on to play against the winners of the Yorkshire Cup in the War of the Roses clash.

Under 13’s Lancashire Cup Final 2016
The under 13’s were chasing a Cup double after winning the North West Counties Cup earlier in the season against Blackbrook. This time they were up against Premier Division Champions Leigh Miners Rangers and it was set to be a great match up.
Miners struck first gaining the advantage with an early score but a Sam Craig off-load put Will Gillhooley over to even up the score almost immediately.
A special effort from Daniel Woodward saw him stretch his legs to run the length of the field for the Hornet’s second try.
Alex Sutton edges Halton further ahead with his dive over the try line. A late try from Miners made the score 14-12 in favour of the Hornets.
In the second half Miners stepped up their game to build some pressure and barge over for a try followed by a well worked kick from the scrum resulting in their second. A second four pointer from Sutton kept the Hornets in contention.
Chasing a score and conversion to even the contest, the Hornets were unlucky on several occasions not to close the gap, but a determined Miners defence held firm.
